By rail faster to Zakopane, thanks to Kombud devices

Kombud has completed the implementation of control systems along the entire Kraków – Zakopane route. Under various contracts, computerized control systems from Kombud were developed, designed and manufactured in Poland. They enable the direction and control of railway traffic on sections of railway lines no. 99, 98, 97, and 94. A total of 603 signals, 314 point machines, and 134 level crossing systems have been installed along the entire route.

Choosing a local contractor will make it easier for the manager to modernize the route in the future if new traffic organization projects emerge.

After receiving the documentation, we can implement the application very quickly because we have everything on site - resources, competence, and components. By building local control centers, we can freely modify traffic dispatchers' computer workstations, introduce universality of workstations, and optimize processes. At most stations, for example at night when fewer trains are running, the dispatcher can direct traffic over a longer section of the route – says Norbert Czarnecki, head of the station systems department at Zakłady Automatyki Kombud S.A.

The key element of the investment was the launch of the Local Control Center in Zakopane, from which traffic on railway line no. 99 is managed. The Zakopane LCS includes the stations: Nowy Targ, Szaflary, Biały Dunajec, and Poronin, and they have been equipped with MOR-1 type computer overlays, which allow for the control of relay systems. Previously, these stations were operated locally, and today they are supervised centrally from one place. The Zakopane station itself is equipped with a MOR-3 type computer system.

– Launching the Local Control Center in Zakopane is an excellent example of our comprehensive and multi-stage implementations. Last year we successfully rolled out 46 new systems, and now, thanks to LCS Zakopane, we are increasing capacity, safety, and travel comfort for hundreds of thousands of passengers – says Artur Marcinkiewicz, President of the Management Board at Zakłady Automatyki Kombud S.A.

The Kraków - Zakopane railway route is one of the most heavily loaded and demanding routes in Poland. This line serves hundreds of thousands of passengers traveling to the mountains every year. Modern railway traffic control systems designed and manufactured by Zakłady Automatyki Kombud have recently begun operating along this entire route. Thanks to this investment, it was possible to increase line capacity, manage traffic more efficiently, and raise safety standards – both for passengers and railway employees.

Kombud Group S.A. unites dynamic companies providing digital solutions for critical infrastructure and industry. Over 35 years of activity, Kombud Group companies have implemented more than 300 station systems for railways and subways, and approximately 3000 traffic safety systems at railway crossings. Kombud's computer systems manage traffic on the Central Railway Mainline (CMK), stations of the Warsaw railway junction, the Broad-gauge Metallurgy Line, as well as both lines of the Warsaw Metro.

Over 700 employees, including 400 engineers, design, patent, and implement modern solutions for subways and railways, based on European standards. Rail-Mil Computers, a company belonging to the Group, is a manufacturer of, among others, eurobalises, programmers, LEU encoders, and other electronic components, as well as the rmCBTC® system, which enables automatic train movement. The Kombud Group also includes Metroprojekt, a company that designed most of the tunnels and stations on the 1st and 2nd lines of the Warsaw Metro, and obtained Poland's first construction permit for a section of the High-Speed Railway.
