Strategic railway hub in Masuria with Kombud devices

One of the most important railway junctions in northeastern Poland, namely the Ełk railway station, has been equipped with modern control systems produced by Kombud Automation Works. Trains have already returned on the Ełk - Giżycko route in June, and on December 14, the next phase of the investment will begin, after the modernization of the section of railway line no. 38 Giżycko - Korsze, also equipped with Kombud systems.

– The proximity of the planned Rail Baltica investment, linking Poland with the Baltic States, makes Ełk a key railway junction of strategic importance. I am proud that we could deliver our systems here, designed and manufactured in Poland. The local competencies that we have built in the field of electronics production for critical infrastructure are becoming crucial in crisis situations – says Artur Marcinkiewicz, CEO of Kombud Automation Works S.A.
Under the contract with Budimex S.A., Kombud will launch the MOR-3 computer system in 2024, which will cover the earlier Ełk and Ełk Cargo stations. The station includes 112 signals, 84 maneuvering boards, 127 switch drives, and 10 derailing devices. A total of 262 axle counters have also been installed at the station. On the route towards Olecko, on railway line no. 41, and on line no. 223 Ełk-Orzysz, CBL 2010 computer blockades have been installed.
The modernization also included 4 level crossings. On railway line no. 41 (towards Olecko and Gołdap), the category B crossing on Sikorskiego Street was equipped with automatic level crossing signaling devices and extended, 8-meter NRE1 type barriers. E category signaling barriers will also appear at the pedestrian crossing on the extension of Komorowskiego and Tęczowa Streets.
Moreover, the control of crossings at category A crossings on Kolejowa Street, near the Ełk Szyba Zachód stop, and category B on Grajewska Street on railway line no. 219 has been moved from the Ełk Cargo station to LCS Ełk. This means that line no. 219 is now the longest stretch of railway line in the country managed from a single LCS (Szczytno), totaling 129 km.
Kombud Automation Works also produced control systems for railway line no. 38 towards Stare Juchy, Wydminy, Giżycko – based on a contract with Aldesa. As part of this contract, a Local Control Center was established in Ełk, which oversees traffic on the line up to Giżycko. The section includes 139 signals and 34 switch drives.
Another section of LK38 Giżycko – Kętrzyn – Korsze, modernized based on a contract with Torpol, will be reopened to traffic on December 14, according to PKP PLK's announcement, and Kombud systems will service the restored railway connections. The devices are operated from LCS Korsze, which includes 186 signals and 136 switch drives. Emergency, local control positions on this route are located in the towns of Sterławki Wielkie, Kętrzyn, and Tołkiny.
